A Gorilla Win!

Getting in the Game with Gorillas

Who doesn’t enjoy being acknowledged for their hard work? Dale is looking dapper in his suit as he is recognized as the winner of the Fred & Cheryl Newby Patrons Award from the National Sculpture Society (NSS) for his sculpture, Enigma.

But the real winner is the gorilla. We’re excited to announce our donation of the prize money from the NSS award to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund!

At Risk for Extinction

All gorillas are considered to be at risk for extinction, and the Gorilla Fund is the world’s foremost organization dedicated to the conservation, protection, and study of gorillas. They have an excellent track record for managing their funds with a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator.

We are proud to donate the winnings from the NSS award to the Gorilla Fund. And we hope you will join us in supporting the protection of this majestic animal. Read our email below sent by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund folks to all their donors.

But back to Enigma. He is a western lowland gorilla. If you see a gorilla in a zoo, it is a western lowland, the subspecies with which most people are familiar. Like all gorillas, they are suffering primarily from habitat loss and climate change affecting their food sources.

We were surprised to learn that some of this habitat loss is due to coltan mining, a mineral used in cell phones and other electronics. Nearly 50% of the world’s coltan comes from Rwanda and the DRC in Central Africa where mountain gorillas live. Participating in cell phone recycling programs lessens the need for continued mining. A win for gorillas. Learn more about coltan, cell phone recycling, and gorillas, here.

Another Gorilla Win

Dian Fossey spent nearly 20 years living with, researching and raising awareness about gorillas. She was the original game changer for the gorillas, and the Gorilla Fund carries on her heroic efforts. Using Dale’s art to bring much-needed awareness to these endangered species is another gorilla win.

If you’d like to get in the game so gorillas win as well, you can join us by donating today. Be a game changer.

Of course, our support of the gorillas doesn’t end with Enigma. You can follow along as Dale’s current piece, a mountain gorilla, emerges from the stone.
